Yogic Stress Relief Meditation to Prevent Freaking Out
This meditation is about altering your energy by changing your nostril breathing.
When feelings become uncomfortable we often wish, and even try to get out of your body. We disassociate, distract, numb ourselves in many ways. But I want to offer this alternative solution. What if you could change your energy from within instead.
TO BEGIN: Sit in a comfortable seated posture, it can be either in a chair or cross legged on the floor. Before starting take a moment to notice your breathe, allow yourself to settle into your seated posture. When you feel ready begin the meditation.
POSTURE: Start by interlacing your fingers with your right thumb on top of the left thumb. Place your hands at the center of the diaphragm line, touching the body.
EYE POSITION: Closed
BREATH & FOCUS: Begin concentrating on your breathing, using your inner vision notice your breath at the tip of your nose. Notice from which nostril you are primarily breathing through, usually within 1 minute you will know.
The focus of this meditation is to change which nostril your are primarily breathing through. If you are breathing primarily through your left nostril, consciously change to your right nostril. Be sure to keep your shoulders completely relaxed. Practice changing this breath back and forth for as long as you like.
TIME: Start with 3 minutes, but you may work up to 5 or 11 minutes.
TO END: Once your time is up, inhale deeply, hold the posture. Squeeze all the muscle along the spine. Hold this for 10 secs. Then exhale. Repeat this two more times.
CONTEMPLATION: Now take a few moments to sense whatever you are feeling and/or thinking. Now sit in the space you created and sense how you feel.
COMMENTS:
- If you are having obsessive thoughts, feeling anxious, stressed out check if you are breathing primarily through your right nostril. To shift your energy do the meditation to change your breathing to the left nostril instead. LEFT SIDE breathing activates Sitali (water cooling energy).
- If you feeling down, sluggish, depressed notice if you are breathing primarily through the left nostril. To shift your energy do the meditation to change your breathing to the right nostril instead. RIGHT SIDE breathing activates Agni (fire energizing energy)In
- When you are first starting out the most important thing is to honor where you are – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. So if you need to pause and relax during the meditation, that’s OK. Just let the clock run and when you are ready bring yourself back to your breath and continue with the practice.
- With each practice you will stay longer and your concentration will increase. Like life, meditation is a constant practice, so please try and enjoy the moment. :D.
- I suggest you give the meditation a try a few days. Positive physical, mental and emotional effects of a yoga practice are cumulative. So, the more you practice, the more you will benefit.
ENJOY! warmly yours … Jennifer
